Sunday Dinner

I love Sunday dinners. A classic around my house is the roast, mashed potatoes, gravy and onions. Now, I've cooked all that before and it's turned out well. I always feel very good about my cooking abilities when I make this meal. It is well-balanced and smells and tastes so good. It reminds me of good times enjoying meals with my family and friends. This week, I decided to get fancy and add yorkshire pudding to the mix. I called my mom to be sure that I had the recipe right and to get any last minute hints. Now yorkshire pudding is a special favorite of the family's. It has a very specific tradition that goes along with the cooking - it's called stress. You get it all ready and in the oven, then you must chant "oh, I know it won'r rise. It just isn't going to work this time. Oh no, oh no, it's just not going to rise." This must be done throughout the cook time. It was especially stressful to me because I had never done this myself, I had only witnessed the stress it caused in others as they made it. Well, it turned out beautifully! I was so proud of myself! It rose and was perfectly golden brown. After I had stuffed myself so full of dinner I spent the rest of the evening singing odes to the dinner to the tune of O Holy Night (oh, yorkshire pudding, your tender golden deliciousness.....) (it's been a while since I've had it), and hey, can I help it if I really love food? :) I was so proud we had to document it hot out of the oven.
p.s. The top photo makes me look like I weigh a thousand pounds, but I promise I have been losing the baby weight and haven't been eating as much as this post makes it sound like :)

p.p.s. (or is it p.s.s.?) The yorkshire pudding doesn't look that tasty, but let me assure you that smothered in gravy it is incredibly delightful!

Laughter...now in video :)

Woody Allen said "I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose." I think Gracie can relate. Though it's usually not laughter that makes milk come out her nose yet, she has just started to laugh at us. But milk coming out her nose makes us laugh :)

We finally got video of her laughing. Here you go Mel. :)

Transition

First, sorry for all the posts about me...we haven't been done anything exciting recently.

So they say that transition is the most difficult part of labor. I think transition is generally the most difficult part of life (I'm not so good at change). Since I had an epidural, transition in labor was not even a smidgen as difficult as transition to being a mommy. Don't get me wrong I love being a mommy, but I've had my moments.

Maybe it is because my brain has shriveled up and died? (The other day at the pediatrician's office I could not think of any appropriate words to use to answer the doc's questions. I was saying things like "they took her away in the thingy to do that stuff to her" or "she had an IV with what-do-you-call-it in it because they thought she had the word that starts with a c". I kid you not, that was what my conversational skills were like that day. I'll bet she'd never in a million years guess that I am a college graduate the way I wowed her with my verbal prowess.) (Another tangent that makes me feel better: According to this article a pregnant woman's brain appears to shrink during pregnancy and can take up to 6 months to regain it's pre-prego size (like the rest of me...). True or not? Let me believe so I can feel better about myself. Thankyou. :) )

Maybe it is because I can't always calm Grace as quickly as I'd like?

Maybe it is because I don't get much human interaction (scratch that...adult interaction - I have plenty of human interaction)?

Maybe it is because I used to go to school and/or work all day, every day and now I do nothing (it seems)?

Maybe it is because there are so many crazy hormones shooting through my body it has no idea what to do?

I've decided I like to work with my hands. I can get things done and admire what a good (or not so much) job I did. But I can immediately see the results nevertheless. Mommying is not like that. (Thought: maybe this is God teaching me patience? I've never been much good at that.) You put forth all of your last bits of love and effort and you still have an adorable red-faced creature squawking at you for who knows what reason? Sometimes it's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Now, Rob is fantastic at letting me know how much he appreciates me, but sometimes I feel like a blob. Sure I clean, I blog, I make dinner (most of the time), I shower, and most of the time I feel good about what I can accomplish. But every once in a while I feel like a failure. Take yesterday for example. I forgot that we had an event to attend at 6 pm and so I didn't start dinner early enough to be able to eat it before we left. I felt totally silly that I had spent the day reading blogs when I could have taken 30 minutes to think about dinner. I felt like a failure. Now, I know (now) that I wasn't failing at wifeing and mommying, but I felt like it. I cried and felt sorry for myself and poor Rob didn't know what to say to make me feel better. Now, don't go calling my midwife up and telling her that I've got post-partum depression. I don't. I was only a 6 (? I don't know out of how much) according to the quiz (? because that's a good way to tell?) I took at my last appointment which I was told is apparently not anything to worry about. Anyway, for recovery usually all I ever need is some food in my belly and a good sleep and I feel much better. I fully attribute my "craziness" to a nasty combination of hormones, tiredness and soaring expectations of myself. Roger Anderson said it perfectly when he said that "you just have to accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue."

I don't write this because I want sympathy. Usually life is peachy, but sometimes... I just think that I am not alone and it's refreshing to hear others' experiences so you don't think that you alone are crazy. Plus it's therapeutic and kind of fun to write it out. :)

Really, how can I not love mommying when I have this beautiful baby smiling at me (most of the day)?

By the way, it took 40-gagillion terrible pictures to get this one cute one. Happy 2 month birthday Grace!

My Morning and a Warning

While I know I have lots to do, what I have I done this morning? I'm sort of ashamed to say, but let me share a brief timeline:
6:30 Fed Grace
7:30 Went back to bed for what I was expecting to be a short time before Grace woke up
10:45 Woke up freaked out that Grace must not be breathing and that's why she slept so long (usually after a full night's sleep she will only sleep maybe 2 hours)
10:50 Grace and I checked our email. As we were doing so, we remembered that we were reading a really funny blog written by a family friend last night that was still up, so I started to read it again. In the meantime, Grace got hungry and started to whimper for brunch, but I read 3 more postings before it turned into a full blown squawk.
11:15 Fed, changed and dressed Grace for the day
11:45 Put Grace in the bouncer and bounced her with my foot so I could read more postings on the blog.
12:15 Grace had had enough of entertaining herself with her bouncer. I read 2 more postings before picking her up and putting her down for her nap.
12:30 Grace is asleep so I put her in the swing and hop in the shower. Knowing that I should be working on Rob's anniversary gift that I need to complete before Friday night or writing my talk that I have to give on Sunday (on the Law of the Harvest....what?) I plopped myself down in front of the computer in the guise of checking my email (I don't get that many, so I don't know why I feel the need to check it numerous times a day). I was sucked again to the Tales of an Ordinary Housewife blog where I read a few (or maybe a little more than that) more postings.

It is now 2:30 and I have worked a little on Rob's gift, not at all on the talk and am in early July of the Tales blog (I'm reading from latest post to oldest). I just hope that there aren't years of postings because my poor child may need a therapist when she's older for all of the time she's been spending in the bouncer and swing because I can't be pulled away from the computer. So, a warning to all you out there: Beware the blog is incredibly entertaining and funny but know that once you pop the fun won't stop (or is it can't stop? Not sure).

A note to those of you who are wondering what Grace is doing now? She's still sleeping, so thankfully I can keep on reading! :)

The Avenues Street Fair

Today we went to the Avenues Street Fair. As we were walking around, we were trying to come up with good names for this posting and I think this adventure will best be summarized by the potential titles for the posting.

  • San Francisco, Utah?
  • Time warp to 1967
  • The Avenues make you want to wear wool and Tevas and grow a beard (this could apply to the men or the women)
  • Au naturale
  • National Democratic Hippie Convention (we couldn't find any memorabilia for a Republican candidate on any level of government)
  • Everywhere else in Utah we fit in...here we stick out
  • Oh my tye dye!
  • Dog to person ratio 1:1

On another (scary :) ) note, I'm becoming my mother. Every dog I saw I named the breed of and/or had the urge to go talk to the owner about the breed. We did see a couple of Viszlas, exciting stuff!

Utah State Fair

Last night Rob and Grace and I went to the Utah State Fair. We had lots of fun looking at exhibits and animals.

We saw the cows. Who knew that there were so many different types of cows. There were 3 barns full of different types of cows. We saw dairy cows (pictured), cattle and beef. Pretty exciting stuff... My favorite one's name was Chiquita Rosita. She wasn't so chiquita because she was fairly gigantic!

We also saw the sheep exhibit. They were awfully cute.

About this time we ran out of batteries on the camera and we wanted to save them for one last picture of the best part of the night. So we didn't get a picture of the pigs. Seeing the Big Pig is my favorite part of the fair. And the Big Pig at this year's state fair didn't disappoint. He was gigantic! His back alone was probably as long as I am tall. Rob guessed that he weighed more than a ton! We also got to see the baby piglets, they were so cute and Grace could relate. I think they taught her some of the noises that she makes in her sleep (for those of you who don't know, Gracie is kind of a noisy sleeper, she grunts a lot while she's asleep!). :)

The best part of the fair was of course the RODEO!!! :) It really wouldn't have been summer had we not attended at least one rodeo, so we were glad that we got to go to this one.
Gracie doesn't look too happy to be here at the rodeo, but don't let the picture fool you, it was the highlight of her day! We had a great time watching the cowboys get bucked. It was pretty entertaining because to start the night off, a bronc bucked himself right over with the cowboy still riding him! It was kind of scary to see the bronc on his side with the cowboy pinned underneath him. Then later, a bull bucked so hard, he bucked himself right over onto his side as well! Luckily that cowboy had already fallen off! I had never seen that before, and to see two animals do it was pretty exciting.

Grace's favorite part was the mutton busting. She was taking notes so that when she's old enough she can try to ride a sheep at the rodeo too!

The most interesting moment came when as we were just sitting in our seats enjoying the show, a very, very drunk old cowboy fell on top of me. He just pretty much collapsed into my lap and man, could you smell the alcohol! I think he was pretty embarrassed, and he held on tightly to his buddy the whole rest of the way down the stairs.

For the Grandmas...

Rise and Shout!

Saturday was the first BYU football game of the season.Gracie got a true cougar blue onesie to wear during the games to cheer her favorite team on!

Rob barbecued some delicious burgers for us to enjoy as we beat Northern Iowa University.

Go Cougs!

Hello Mexico!

Cozumel, Mexico - August 17-24, 2008

Well, Grace has the first stamp in her passport. Rob, Grace and I spent a week in Cozumel, Mexico thanks to Wayne Leary, Rob's old Scout leader who took four of his scouts and their wives on a dive trip to Cozumel. The friends that came on the trip were Wayne Leary, John and Patricia Leary, Preston and Melissa Anderson, Tom and Crystine Carter and Rob, Gracie and me.

Photo at right shows Gracie riding the towel swan that the nice housekeeping senora made for us. She loved Grace, as did all the locals. Everywhere we went, both the men and the women fawned over her. She was a big hit. The women would say "Oh! Muy chiquitita!" in a really high voice. A few of them even asked if they could hold her. It was really interesting to contrast the cultural differences of the Mexicans who weren't afraid to touch or kiss her with an English family we met who would hardly come over to see her even when we invited them to (they had stared at her for a long time from a distance). It was really nice to feel welcome with her around - it really warmed people up immediately.

Grace did a great job on the trip. She pretty much immediately fell asleep as soon as we went outside because it was so hot and humid!

The pool area of our hotel, Hotel Cozumel. The pool was really nice. It was huge - there are lots of little areas of the pool that you can swim in that makes it feel like there aren't a ton of other people swimming with you. The day this picture was taken I think I was the only one in the pool.

Gracie and Daddy's favorite position for lounging by the pool.

Some Trip Highlights:

Four Mexicans and a Hard Rock Cafe
On our first night in Cozumel, we went to eat at the smallest Hard Rock Cafe in the world. Grace was asleep when we got there and we thought that it would be a good idea to put her down on the bench while we ate. Bad idea. She woke right up and Rob and I both had ordered two-handed food, so we couldn't hold her and eat at the same time. So we were passing her back and forth while we ate...it wasn't working so well. So when our little Mexican waitress asked if she could hold her, we let her. It was so cute to have all of the waiters and waitresses in the whole restaurant. Coming soon is the photo (Tommy took it for us on his camera).

The Infamous Pirate Cruise
Wayne had heard about a steak and lobster pirate cruise that sailed every weekend. So we decided to go on Friday night as a fun night out for everyone (not to mention it sounded incredibly tasty). Tom and Crystine had been on a pirate cruise when they went to Mexico and they said that theirs was fun and romantic. We were all really excited to go! Well, let's just say that it was an all-you-can-drink (and let's see how drunk we can get you) cruise and it was less than romantic. Pretty much they played drinking games and were naughty the whole time. I guess we should have known we were in for an adventure when we saw the disco ball hanging on the deck. Anyway, adventure it was. All of the pirates kissed Gracie at least once. The Pirate Barracuda (on left in the photo) stole Crystine's earring, then lost it, but the Pirate Porkchop (in the middle) found it. Preston Anderson was caught off guard and got Tequila squeezed into his mouth.

The steak and lobster was delicious. Most of the time we were trying to make small talk to distract ourselves so we wouldn't pay attention to the raunchiness going on on the deck. After dinner, however, the pirates turned on a strobe light and fought with swords blazing. It was so cool! There were sparks flying off their swords as they fought feet (and sometimes inches) away from the passengers. I was grateful that there was no drinking on the job for the pirates.

We did experience an amazing sunset on the cruise.

  • Rob getting to dive morning and evening on a few days
  • Seeing sharks, eels and barracudas on dives
  • Swimming with the dolphins
  • Visiting the Mayan ruins at Tulum
  • Xel-Ha - an awesome natural river and sea inlet that you can float or snorkel down
  • Shopping. This probably depends on who you ask :)
  • Collecting wristbands...everything we did required us to have a wristband
  • Eating delicious food (even if it did make us sick...)
  • Karaoke at our hotel. Preston, Melissa and Amanda all sang along with the drunkards in attendance.
