Greenwich

Last Saturday we headed to Greenwich (pronounced gren-itch). We took a train to the London Eye Pier at Southbank, and then took a boat the rest of the way. It was fun to see the sights of London from the Thames!

Everyone was excited for our trip!

Views from the ride there:

Greenwich is a really cute town known for the Royal Naval College and it's sea-faring history.

We had a yummy lunch at Pizza Express and Grace got creative with the monster face stickers :)

The National Maritime Museum had a lot of neat displays. I loved the mastheads from the different ships!

I thought she was interesting. The plaque nearby said that she was a masthead on a Spanish ship that was stolen in the night by 4 junior officers from the HMS Sirius which was docked nearby. I can't imagine rowing in the pitch black night, climbing up the ship's cable and sawing her off!

The grounds around the Naval College were beautiful, as were the classical-style buildings.

There was once a summer palace at Greenwich, but the house above is the only part of that original palace that still stands, it's now called the Queen's House and houses naval art.

The Royal Observatory is on the top of the hill in the distance. It's a killer walk straight up, even without pushing a bajillion-ton buggy! :)

Pooped at the top after the hike up!

View of Greenwich from the top. It was spectacular. I can only imagine how beautiful it will be in the springtime!

The kids had fun messing around while we waited in line to stand over the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude of the world, in case you might have forgotten).

Aaaaand, here we are! Surprisingly, Ruby was the most difficult one to stand over the line for the picture.

The Greenwich Museum was really interesting and had lots of hands on stuff to do.
I spy someone(s) I know hanging on that wall.

We all got to try on a jousting helmet!

We left the museum to hurry and catch our boat back because it was starting to drizzle. Sadly, when we got in line the lady told us that we just missed the cut off and would have to wait for the next boat. Then a spectacular lightning storm started, which we oohed and aahed at until it started to rain in earnest. Then it started to pour. Then what can only be described as torrential rain pummeled us flipping our umbrellas inside out and soaking us to the bone. The nice boat people let us run down the gangway to a tiny covered waiting area just in time for the storm to abate. The ride home was very wet, but London's lights at night are so beautiful!

Tired (and mostly dry) us on the train home. Another fun day!
