Last Saturday we hopped on a train and headed out to Cambridge. Rob was excited to visit the University that has produced some amazing musicians that he has admired for many years (King's Singers and John Rutter's Cambridge Singers). The city was so charming and the architecture and decorations were all stunning. It was a beautiful day and we had a fantastic time!
Outside the station was a sea of bicycles. I think we saw more bicyclists here than we did in Copenhagen!
Grace had her camera, so much of her time looked like this. Like mother, like daughter I guess!
King's College Cathedral is in the background here. Cambridge is made up of 31 different colleges and King's is one of them, started by King Henry VI.
I was a bit distracted by kids as we walked into the chapel, so when I got a chance to look up, I literally gasped because I was awestruck by it! The cathedral is covered by intricately carved stone and stained glass windows. It is just incredible!
This screen conceals the organ. It was originally a gift from Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn on their marriage.
The grounds at King's. Sadly, exams were taking place so we weren't allowed to tour the grounds or the other buildings.
The River Cam runs behind the colleges through what the students call "the backs" (...of the colleges) and there are lots of punts for hire with students and tourists having a grand old time. It looked like fun, so we hired one which was actually punted by a Cambridge professor who does it on the weekends for fun (and good cash!). It was fun to watch because some were punted by pros and others by first timers so there were many a traffic jam with boats ramming each other and the like. When a boat passes you, you are practically shoulder to shoulder with them, so it makes for a good time enjoying the company of everyone on the river.
The ubiquitous King Henry VIII - he seems to have made his mark on every part of England!
It was such a lovely day!
